China works best when the trip is built around a few strong bases instead of trying to cross the whole country at speed. The expanded first-trip route now highlights five recommended regions: Beijing for imperial history, Shanghai for modern city energy, Zhangjiajie for vertical mountain scenery, Xi'an for ancient capital heritage, and Guilin / Yangshuo for river-and-karst landscapes.
Start in Beijing for the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, hutong walks, and a Great Wall day trip. Shanghai adds riverfront walks on the Bund, art districts, old lanes, gardens, and fast rail options. Zhangjiajie needs weather flexibility because viewpoints, cable cars, and glass bridge plans can change with rain or visibility.
Xi'an is the best heritage extension for the Terracotta Army, city walls, Muslim Quarter food, and Tang dynasty atmosphere. Guilin / Yangshuo is the softer scenic extension, built around Li River views, limestone peaks, cycling, villages, and slower countryside days. For a short first trip, choose three or four of the five; for a longer trip, connect all five with careful rail and flight planning.
